Adonai | 「主」或「主人」

“Adonai” (אֲדֹנָי) is a Hebrew title for God, meaning “Lord” or “Master.”

Linguistic Meaning:

Adonai is the plural form of Adon (אָדוֹן), which means “lord” or “master.”

Though plural in form, it is used with singular verbs when referring to God, indicating majesty or supreme authority—not multiple gods.

Reverence for the Name of God:

Jewish tradition avoids pronouncing YHWH (the sacred Tetragrammaton, God’s personal name).

Instead, Adonai is said aloud when reading YHWH in the Hebrew Bible.

Used in Worship:

It acknowledges God’s lordship and authority over all.

Believers use it to show submission, reverence, and honor to God as Master and Ruler.

Biblical Examples:

Psalm 8:1 – “O Lord (Adonai), our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!”

Genesis 15:2 – Abraham says, “O Lord God (Adonai YHWH), what will you give me…”

 Application in Faith:

When you call God Adonai, you are:

Acknowledging Him as your Master

Surrendering to His authority and will

Honoring Him with reverent obedience

Father, Adonai, You are the ruler of my life. I am willing to fully trust you, follow you, let go of my own will, and submit to your arrangements. I ask you to lead me to walk in your will, so that my life may glorify your name. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

Adonai(אֲדֹנָי是希伯来文中上帝的称呼,意思是 「主」或「主人」。

源与法:

「Adon」
